The Derlins have been in the Roanoke Valley for a long time. And to add to that fact, they've been rich for a long time, too. The Derlin family moved to Roanoke from Britain 70 years ago. The mother was a fashion designer and the father was a famous photographer, whose prints were usually quick to sell.
No one really knows why the two moved to Roanoke, and most people didn't even know where they went. Most thought they went into hiding, for their pictures and designs were still there. They had several kids, all of which were talented, and all of which went to the newly built Lording's Academy.
The Derlins have always gone to Lording's Academy, and made great contributions to the school, and to the city. Which is why you may often see plaques in the school and in the city with the family name on them. The Derlins have continuously had children of great talent. Artists, musicians, actors, they've all been out there, and still, some have stayed in Roanoke. The Derlins have also harbored disgust for the students of Lucy Madison, thinking them to be lower class, which they were.
This prejudice has also run through the family. And it currently is with William, Elijah, and little Gabriella. Their father is a noted newspaper writer. He does not currently live full-time in Roanoke, but in the capital of Virginia, Richmond, for that is where his job is at. His wife and children do live in Roanoke however, along with Thomas's sister and her husband.
