'What You Do on Your Own Time's Just Fine;
Likes:
hot coffee every morning, old & classic type writers, old books, painting, cheese, warmth, wool scarves, leather band watches, sleeping in really late in the afternoon, unique furniture, inspirational people & things, movies, winter coats, the smell of gardenias, the ocean, the irony, steamed asparagus.
Dislikes:
holding hands, running out of paint, hot weather, hats with feathers, people absorbed in appearances, reading maps, schedules, robots, novels with no depth, wearing a tie, gift shopping, cheesy holiday cards, obnoxiously loud people in cinemas, gingerbread, getting charcoal on his hands, his work space being too tidy, cough medicine.
Hobbies:
painting, observing, traveling, being surprising, going to art museums.
Habits:
not wearing shoes, humming while he paints, quirking an eyebrow when he thinks someone's lying.
Goals:
go to art school, visit barcelona and paris, set up permanent residence near or in MoMA
Fears:
rats, open stovetops, pasta sauce.
General Personality:
emotionally in tune, intuitive, he's good at reading people, seems to have a vastly mature idea of human nature, insanely creative, brilliant, unconventional, very opinionated, openly expresses his ideas, confident, a bit of a romantic at heart, loyal, though on occaison a little aloof by choice, brazen, imaginative, socially detached, can be really sophisticated and really cheeky, he's got a very good sense of humor, can be sarcastic, individualistic, unrefined, has a tendency to be really gloomy at times, never talks about the story behind his paintings, rather, he presents them and lets people make of them what they will, and is therefore somewhat enigmatic, rational, seems to fail when it comes to deadlines, a bit lazy, has a messy studio, can be rather intolerable at times, but generally he's a uniquely good guy, even though he's a little off his rocker.
Lucas has a love - hate relationship with the rest of the human race. He draws some of his greatest inspiration from the people around him, but he gets frustrated easily, and, admittedly, irrationally. He doesn't always have a reason for snapping at people or sighing loudly in a person's general direction. He's secretly a romantic, and likes to paint in black and white while listening to classical music.
Above all else, Lucas is an artist. He's experimented with mediums for the past four or five years, dabbling in charcoal, watercolour, and acrylic, and sculpture, and he still isn't quite sure what he wants his focus to be, but that's alright; Lucas figures he has four years of college to decide that. That said, it should be made known that Lucas is quite the indecisive character, and he often second guesses himself.
A bit of a slob, Lucas has been banned from bringing his personal belongings out of the two rooms he has at home, otherwise the entire house would be a train wreck. His two rooms are his bedroom, where he keeps his bed, his wardrobe, and his computer, and his painting studio, where he keeps everything else. The second room originally had white walls, as per Lucas's request, but they are now splattered with varying shades of colour, and have some charcoal sketches tacked to them.
Creatively, Lucas has a genius. There's nothing he likes better than to shut himself in his studio with a large mug of coffee and some music. Ironically, he likes to draw people the best. Lucas loves more abstract art - Paul Klee is one of his personal heroes - but when he paints people, he makes them look real, almost like the might jump off of the canvas and start talking to you.
As far as school goes, Lucas is uninterested, at best. He doodles on all of his tests, rarely, if ever, does his homework, and regularly skips class. He sometimes suspects that if the studio art teachers didn't like him so much, he might have been expelled eons ago. As it is, Lucas is trying to graduate having passed all of his senior classes - he also suspects that Calc might kill him - and then go to art school and never have to learn logs or talk about the Civil War again.
'You Are My Heroine;

Appearance:
Lucas is good - looking in a gawky sort of way, he thinks. His hair is light brown, and while it's not exactly long, it's not exactly short, either, and it's definitely unkept. It's got a tiny bit of curl to it, but not enough to be called curly hair. As far as Lucas is concerned, hair is hair. It is to be washed on a regular basis, and, apart from that, it is to be left alone. He gets it trimmed every now and again, when it gets long enough to be distracting. He's fairly tall, which adds to the gawky - ness; Lucas is six feet tall, but he's sort of skinny, in a wiry, muscular way. There are defined muscles in his arms and chest, but he's definitely not an athlete.
There is a smattering of freckles on Lucas's body; there's a large one on his left hip, a cluster of them near the right corner of his mouth, below his right eyebrow, on the left side of his neck. His skin isn't tan, but it's not pale either; like so much else, it's in between. Thankfully, it's smooth and soft; Lucas has never had a problem with acne. It probably wouldn't matter if he did, because he's never cared too much about his own appearance, but as it is, he's happy that his skin is nice and smooth. He has blue eyes that laugh when he laughs, and frown when he frowns.
Clothing Style:
Personally, Lucas doesn't care what he wears. His younger sister, however, does; she's thinking about becoming a designer, and she uses Lucas as her own personal male model. She picks out most of his outfits, and Lucas lets her, because, as stated, he doesn't particularly care. He ends up wearing an assortment of designer shirts, cashmere sweaters, and ultra - soft scarves, among other things. Lucas does have a sort of affinity for hats, though, and he has one that he wears all the time when it gets cool outside. It's a knitted number that barely covers his ears and it's blue and gray striped. Lucas never wears shoes, unless he absolutely has to. He arrives at school wearing shoes, and they disappear within five minutes of entering the building.
'The Hours That Were Left Behind;
Family:
Maria (Adams) Kristaller - 49, newspaper editor
Walter Kristaller - 54, publishing agent
Anna Kristaller - 16, sophomore at Lucy Madison
History:
Maria Adams grew up in Roanoke Valley. She herself attended Lucy Madison, and she liked it fairly well. She graduated with honors and moved to New York City to study journalism. That's where she met Walter Kristaller, a fellow student of journalism. They had an on and off romance for the duration of their time at school, and, just after graduation, decided to get married. The decision was rash and both Maria and Walter would grow to regret it, but, for the time being, they were happy.
The literary couple settled in New York City, and they both got jobs, Maria as an intern at a small New York newspaper, and Walter as an assistant in a publishing house. Their jobs kept them away from their home for a few years, and their marriage started to fall apart. In an effort to save it, the couple made another rash decision: to have a baby. They figured that if they had a reason to stay married, than they would make more of an effort to have a good marriage. Andrew Lucas Kristaller was welcomed into their family in late August. For a while, everything was going alright. Maria had been promoted and was an editor, and Walter was slowly making his own way up the ladder of success.
Maria had grown up in a large family in Virginia, and she began to worry that Lucas would be lonely if he was an only child. Lucas, two years old at the time of his sister's birth, had a certain je ne sais quoi, but he also had an odd temperament, and Maria worried about him. It was both of these factors that led to the birth of the Kristaller's second child, a daughter named Anna.
After another eight years, Maria and Walter both knew that their marriage could not be saved. They practice amicable divorce. Walter still lives in New York City and is a publishing executive, while Maria moved back to Virginia to raise her children. They spend the school year in Roanoke, and Christmas, winter, spring, and summer holidays in New York.
